English

(A. Introduction and Problem Statement:) The issue of “differences in readings of the Holy Quran” has long been one of the most challenging issues in the fields of Quranic sciences, jurisprudence, and interpretation, and has had important consequences in deducing rulings and explaining religious teachings. The need for a reasoned response to these doubts, on the one hand, and the need to accurately organize the scattered views in the interpretative and jurisprudential tradition of the two sects (Shiites and Sunnis) on the other, are the goals of this research. (B. Research Objectives and Methods:) The main goal of the article is a comparative analysis of the approach of the two sects to differences in readings in narrational interpretations; this research is descriptive-analytical and comparative in nature and, by utilizing first-hand library resources in the fields of Quranic sciences, jurisprudence, and interpretations of the Qur’an, it examines the specialized topics of the article. (C. Key Results and Findings:) Despite the existence of a wide range of jurisprudential and interpretive differences between the two sects regarding the authenticity of the readings (such as how to convey the hadith of the “seven letters” or the criterion for the correctness of the reading in prayer), the central view of the majority of jurists and commentators is based on two basic principles: 1. The unity of the revealed text of the Quran and 2. The frequency of the official reading (Hafs from Asim) and the negation of verbal distortion.
