Abstract
Verse 39 of Sūrat al-Raʿd is a key Qur'anic basis for the doctrine of Badāʾ and a major point of debate between Shi'a and Sunni scholars. Shi'a exegetical narrations interpret Badāʾ as the manifestation of conditional divine decrees in creation, involving changes in the external realization of events and God's active knowledge, not His essential knowledge. In contrast, many Sunni scholars, understanding Badāʾ as the emergence of knowledge after ignorance, reject it as incompatible with divine eternal knowledge. This study uses a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach to examine Shi'a and Sunni narrations on this verse. It finds that the disagreement mainly results from different definitions of Badāʾ and from conflating its meaning as divine manifestation for humans with a change in God's knowledge. Sunni narrations on effacement and confirmation (maḥw and ithbāt), supplication, kinship ties, and decree alteration also contain themes similar to Shi'a ideas of Badāʾ.Thus, the disagreement is largely conceptual rather than substantive, arising from different theological frameworks. The study clarifies the relation between maḥw wa ithbāt and Badāʾ, offering a more coherent understanding of the doctrine in light of exegetical narrations.
